MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A man is in trouble with Memphis police after running up a $3,000 cab fare and refusing to pay.

Lucilo Perez came to Memphis for Christmas, but he'll likely spend that holiday behind bars. Perez traveled to Memphis from Miami in a taxi cab, and racked up a $3,000 fare that police say his girlfriend, Nellie Rose, promised to pay.

But when Perez arrived, she refused to pay.

"We wouldn't have had someone to come all the way from Miami to Memphis in a cab and no money," Rose said.

Friday, Rose denied booking her boyfriend's unusual travel arrangements, but the owner of the cab company tells a different story.

"The woman said to the driver on the phone, 'Look, we're good people. We have three thousand dollars here for you in cash when you get here,'" the owner said.

Perez's girlfriend allegedly begged the driver to bring her boyfriend home for Christmas.  The driver thought Perez, who was well dressed, seemed thrustworthy, so they got on the road."

"Poor driver got stuck for expenses, gas time, lost hotel food, plus he had to drive 20 hours there and 20 hours back," the cab company's owner said.

Meanwhile, Perez's trip is getting more expensive. Friday, he found himself in jail under on a $7,500 bond.

"We're in the process of trying to get him out but they consider him a flight risk," Rose said.

A flight would have been a cheaper way for Perez to come home for Christmas, a he'll celebrate with inmates rather than loved ones.

Meanwhile, Rose said she and other relatives are trying to raise enough money to pay for Perez's ride, but she won't have the cash before the first of the year.
