Fatal accident snarls traffic on I-240 northbound

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An accident involving nearly a dozen vehicles left traffic at a standstill for hours Monday morning on I-240 North at Lamar in Midtown.

Witnesses at the scene said the accident may have been caused by black ice on the roadway.

"When I got there, I just seen cars tore up everywhere," witness George Thompson said.

Officials said a 26-year-old woman driving a Honda accord was killed in the accident.

"A car went under that big truck and cut the top off the car," witness Ellis Webster said. "They say it was a lady in there."

Police have not released the name of the person who died.  Meanwhile, several other people were taken to the hospital following the wreck.

"Fortunately, we didn't have any critical injuries," said Lt. Col. Mark McClain of the Memphis Police Department. "We did have one child transferred to Le Bonheur in non-critical condition.  We also had three adults transferred to The MED in non-critical condition.

The interstate was closed for hours while officials investigated the accident and worked to clear the roadway, snarling the Monday morning commute for many.

The road was re-opened for traffic late Monday morning.
