Southaven delivery truck driver scares off robbers by honking horn

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Eight teenagers were arrested late last week on charges they tried to rob a delivery truck driver.

According to Lt. Mark Little of the Southaven Police Department, the incident happened just before 9:00 p.m. Thursday on Coral Hills Drive.  As the delivery truck driver drove slowly down the street while searching for an address, he caught the attention of a group of teens.

"This group of kids approached him from both sides of the vehicle," Little said. "Two of the individuals produced what he described as a handgun, and ordered him to give them their money."

According to Little, the driver thought it was a joke at first.  When he realized the teens were serious, he began honking the horn on his truck.  The noise attracted attention, bringing neighbors outside and sending the teens scattering through a nearby park.

Police were called and tracked down eight teenagers, ranging in age from 14 to 17-years-old.  They were arrested and booked into the adult jail in DeSoto County on $50,000 bond, accused of attempted armed robbery.

According to Mississippi Law state law, anyone age 13 or older who is accused of using a handgun during a felony can be tried as an adult.  Little said that is highly possible in this case.

"There's a lot of factors in there we have to look at," he said. "The district attorney will make the final decision, or we'll take it to a grand jury and let them make the final decision."

Investigators say they expect to make some kind of decision soon. Little also says there could be more charges and maybe more arrests, too.
