MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Shelby County Commissioners selected a replacement for former Commissioner Joe Ford at their meeting Monday afternoon.

In a surprise pick, after several rounds of voting, commissioners chose Edith Moore to replace Ford.  Moore, a retired IBM employee from Murfeesboro, was sworn in a short time later.

Moore was joined by several others who had thrown their hats into the ring, including Joe Ford's son Justin, James Boyd, James Catchings, Ike Griffith, and Jarvis Jamayne Harris.

At Monday's meeting, each candidate told commissioners why he or she wanted the position.  A seventh candidate, Marcus Holiday, dropped out of contention.

Commissioners also accepted Commissioner Matt Kuhn's resignation Monday.  Kuhn, who resigned last week to work inside Ford's administration, recalled when he was appointed to the commission.

"I remember when I was on the other side, about ten months ago, when I was in Justin Ford's, Catching's, Griffith's and some of the other applicants shoes," he said. "With the removal of commissioner Ford and myself, the commission is down to 11 votes."

Ford has said he will serve the remainder of former Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton's term, and will not seek election to a full term as county mayor.
