Have too much to drink? Local program offers "Tow to Go"

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - You don't have to worry about drinking and driving or even taking a cab this holiday season. Now, if you have too much to drink, a free program will help you get yourself - and your car - home safely.

Tuesday, officials at AAA Auto Club South and Budweiser said they were teaming up with the city of Memphis and Shelby County to keep drivers like Memphis resident Fred Young safe on the roads.

"I don't normally get drunk and drive, but during the holiday season you do have a little bit more than you normally would," Young said Tuesday.

Anyone who has had too much to drink will be urged to call AAA's toll free number, and a AAA tow truck will take the driver and his or her vehicle home for free.

"It's about getting everyone home safely," said AAA's Joanna Newton. "We want to make sure when you're going to Grandma's house, when you're going to your loved ones, that you're all going to get home safely."

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton said safety on the roads is as important as battling crime.

"Often when you think safety you think in terms of no more burglaries, robberies and that kind of thing, but safety on our streets, our highways, our bi-ways is just as critical," he said.

Officials often warned that local law enforcement will be out in force over the holiday season to keep drunk drivers off the roads.

"Life is precious," Young said. "You only have one."

That's why everyone is also being reminded to choose a designated driver before heading out to celebrate.
