Burglars plow through Midtown drugstore's back wall...again

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - For the third time in less than a year, burglars have broken into a Midtown Memphis mainstay.

In the dark of night, Dr. Charles Smith's livelihood is crumbling, brick by brick. Early Wednesday morning, at the Wiles-Smith Drug Store, thieves plowed a hole through the building's back wall.

"It's a little tough...little tough," Smith said.

For the most part, Smith's inventory was left intact, likely because an alarm and the subsequent police officers spooked the burglars before they took anything.  But drug stores remain popular for burglars.  In fact, Wednesday's break-in was the third at Wiles-Smith since early June.

"I think I'll just put a sign out back and ask them what they want and leave it out there at night for them so they won't come in," Smith said. "I don't think the DEA would like that."

So, Smith is considering more drastic options.  Wiles-Smith, a pharmacy and diner that has been a mainstay in Memphis for 67 years might not make it to year 68.

"It's just getting to be such old hat," Smith said. "I'm disgusted."

Smith, who has owned the store for 40 years is fed up, and close to closing, nearly broken by three break-ins in a year.
