MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South father stopped a man who tried to steal his daughter's car, but it was what the would-be thief said that made him mad.

Bennie Lockett is not a man to be trifled with.  Tuesday, his wife and daughter had just left their home on Manassas when the incident occurred.

"I heard someone trying to get in the door," Lockett said.

Lockett looked out a window, but didn't see anyone.  He did a few things inside his house, and then went outside, heading to the garbage can.  It was then that he noticed a man sitting in his daughter's Hyundai, which was parked in his driveway.

"I go open the car door and I say, 'What are you doing in this car?' He said, 'This is my B's car.'"

Lockett wondered if the man was talking about his daughter, but quickly determined he wasn't.

Lockett said daughter was devastated last year when someone broke into her car and took her children's Christmas presents. He was not going to let that happen again.

Angry at the man's words, Lockett grabbed him out of the car. Lockett yelled at his neighbor to call police.  They wrestled the man to the ground and held him until the police arrived.

The suspect, Larry McKnight, is charged with burglary.  Meanwhile, Lockett feels lucky that no one was hurt.

"If my wife and daughter had come back home, he could have done anything to them," Lockett said.

Lockett said he was not afraid, and admitted he did not know if McKnight had a gone.  He said his main concern was making sure McKnight did not take his daughter's car.
