COGIC church gives to families in need

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Members of the Church of God in Christ gave away thousands of dollars worth of toys and clothes Friday to families who could otherwise not afford Christmas.

It is more important to give than receive...that was the message Friday morning at Greater Community Temple in Memphis, where members held their annual Christmas giveaway of toys, money and clothes to families in need.

"It's so important, because today it seems that people are having a hard time, and you want to remind them that church is the place to go," event coordinator Melanie Johnson said.

The Ward family, who just moved here from Alabama, were among those to receive gifts.  Daughter Shelby was chosen to receive a new CD player, courtesy of the church. Her mother,  Lee Ann, said it has been a rough year, but she is thankful for those who care.

"We're a struggling family," she said. "If it wasn't for the church and the church family, our kids wouldn't have gotten anything this year, so community and helping each other is very important."

One of the highlights was the money grab, in which children were given 10 seconds to grab as much money as they could hold while blindfolded.

Bishop Brandon Porter said the message of the day is that you are never alone.

"In my message, I shared that your family is not awful because they can't do, because as long as your a part of the family of God, someone will do," he said.
