Former Miss. state Rep. Charlie Capps Jr. dies

CLEVELAND, Miss. (AP) - Former Mississippi State Rep. Charles Wilson Capps Jr. of Cleveland is dead at the age of 84.

Ray Funeral Home in Cleveland says he died Friday at Bolivar Medical Center. Capps was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Merigold, Miss., but lived all his life in Cleveland.

His funeral will be Monday at First United Methodist Church in Cleveland.

Capps was a state representative from 1972 until he retired in 2005. He was chairman of the House Appropriations Committee and Constitution Committee, and also served on the Military Affairs, Ethics, and Insurance Committees.

His career in politics began in 1964, when he was elected sheriff of Bolivar County.

His wife, Allen Hobbs Capps, died in 2004.

He is survived by two daughters, a son, and their children.
