MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Family members are mourning the death of an eight-year-old boy killed earlier this week in an accident on an ATV.

Thursday, the day many people were making New Years Eve plans, Japerion Lawson's family arrived at Harrison Funeral Home to plan his burial.

"It's a hole in my heart," said his grandmother, Rittie Marshal. "I can't really explain it. There's a part of me gone. I don't know how to accept it."

Marshal fought back tears as she talked about eight-year-old Japerion and his favorite sport, riding four-wheelers.

"He rides them all the time," she said. "I just don't know what happened this time. He had his helmet on. It was just three people on a bike, and he was driving it, and he hit a tree."

Japerion's grandfather said the boy was driving the four-wheeler, with two teenagers riding with him, when the accident occurred. A 17-year old passenger on the ATV was not hurt, but Japerion's 17-year-old uncle had to be treated at the hospital for leg injuries after the crash.

Family members said Japerion's mother was heartbroken by what happened.

"She's devastated," Marshal said. "She's devastated."

Family members said the ATV accident happened in Hickory Hill.  Japerion Lawson's funeral is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
