MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The Memphis Union Mission is gearing up for winter weather and needs help as some Mid-Southerners try to find a warm place to sleep.

Steve Carpenter with the Memphis Union Mission said helping the homeless is part of their goal.

"That's what we're here for, to minister to people," Carpenter said.  "We don't see it as a burden, but an opportunity."

Carpenter said that during times like these, the shelter relies heavily on donations from the public.  Carpenter says right now there is a need for coats, blankets, and men's clothing.

The agency currently serves three meals a day, so extra food is also a necessity.

"We can take non-perishable stuff.  Canned goods, pasta, sugar, flour, that kind of stuff," Carpenter said.  "We can take perishable things as well because we have storage for that."

Carpenter said help can go a long way by keeping people safe and warm during this cold snap.

"It's certainly challenging," Carpenter said, "but it's also an opportunity for us to do what we've been called to do and that's to care for people who in many cases don't have another option but to come to a place like Memphis Union Mission."
