MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police continued their search Monday for a suspect wanted in a series of sexual assaults.
Investigators said last Wednesday they believe up to five incidents of sexual assault committed between May 2009 and January 1, 2010 may have been committed by the same suspect.
The suspect has been described as an African-American male, between 5 feet 6 inches and 6 feet 2 inches tall, 220 pounds, with a stocky build. The suspect has generally worn all black, and has a deep voice with a possible Northern accent.
Major Loris Hopkins, Commander of the Sex Crimes Bureau, said many of the attacks have occurred on the second floor of apartment complexes.
"In many of these cases the suspect enters through a second floor window or unlocked door," Hopkins said.
Hopkins also said many people do not take the proper precautions because they do not live on the ground floor.
"Don't be fooled by the false sense of security just because they live on the second floor," Hopkins said.
The suspect awakes the victims in their sleep. Property has been taken in three of the incidents.
The five victims range in age from 19 to 29.
Hopkins advises citizens living in apartment complexes to lock their doors and windows.
"Number one thing we want the public to know is to lock all doors and windows," Hopkins said.
