Public defender appointed for alleged shooter

HENDERSON, Tenn. (AP) - A public defender has been appointed for a southern Tennessee man charged with shooting and killing a police officer.

The Jackson Sun reported that Judge Larry McKenzie appointed Assistant Public Defender Kandi Collins as Ricky Steward's lawyer on Friday after he said he did not have money to hire an attorney.

Capt. Dennis Cagle died Dec. 13, just days after being shot once in the stomach at a grocery store in Chester County.

Steward, 48, has been charged with aggravated robbery and attempted first-degree murder in the case. His wife, Cheryl, is also charged with aggravated robbery.

Both Stewards are being held without bond.
