SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - The DeSoto County Sheriff is commending two men for their quick thinking after they chased off two would-be burglars Friday afternoon.

The incident happened Friday afternoon at a home along Stateline Road just outside the Southaven's city limits.  According to witnesses, several men pulled up to the home in a white van and rang the doorbell.

Investigators believe the suspects cased the house before breaking in, but they didn't realize someone was home.

"Evidently they walked around the house and came in the back door," said DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco. "She heard them, saw them in there, pushed her bedroom closed, and called a neighbor across the street."

That neighbor was Edward Pettigrew, who, with the victim's boyfriend, Derek Smith, quickly took matters into their own hands.

"He goes around one side of the house and I'm going around the other," Pettigrew said. "I get around the house and I hear a fence break and two shots fire off."

The robbers ran out of the house after hearing the shots, taking down a back fence and almost hitting Smith.
"They were probably five to six yards when I shot the second time, and I shot the drivers side window out, and then shot the second time hitting midways down the van," Smith said.

According to Rasco, the suspects are still at large.  Rasco commended Pettigrew and Smith for their quick action, saying people have a right to protect their property, especially when someone is on it.
