MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis Police are investigating the sudden death of a well-known local musician.

Jimmy Lee Lindsey, 29, better known as Jay Reatard, died in his sleep early Wednesday morning.

Lindsey was already well known around the world, and with the release of his critically-acclaimed album "Watch Me", was set for breakout success in the US.

Lindsey played at the Buccaneer Lounge and Restaurant on Monroe Sunday night.  Owner Charles Lankford was shocked by Lindsey's death.

"Its always sad to see anyone go," Lankford said, "especially at such a young age."

Lankford also said Lindsey was a force in the punk rock music world.

"There will be young bands out there and these kids, they'll want to be Jay Reatard when they grow up," Lankford said.

Lindsey's record label Matador wrote in a statement how devastating it was to lose Lindsey.

Lindsey played in bars in the Cooper-Young and Midtown areas as well as around the world.  Friends said he complained of not feeling well in the past few days. Lindsey thought he had the flu.

Lindsey has had troubles in the past . In October his entire band quit in an undisclosed dispute.

It is not clear why Lindsey died.  Memphis police are currently investigating.
