THIS WEEK'S BIG TIP: Slim Skillets, 2200 N. Germantown Parkway, Cordova, TN, (901) 384-1690
You can write Slim Skillets's menu on a cocktail napkin: fried chicken, rolls, corn, mashed potatoes, cole slaw, green beans, chicken gravy.
Trust me, that's all you need for fun, flavor and the best fried chicken at this newcomer in Cordova.
"We are doing a skillet-fried chicken restaurant which, to our knowledge, is not being done in the United States of America," said Scott Day, who owns and operates Slim Skillets with his father, Dennis. "We're not trying to make our chicken better than any mother's or grandmother's. We're just trying to get in that neighborhood."
They're in that neighborhood. Actually, they've taken it over and re-written the covenants.
You know your restaurant makes really good fried chicken when your customer Lou Goodwin of Eads, TN, dumps her multi-generation fried chicken recipe to eat five times in the last three months at Slim Skillets.
"It's probably about the only place where you can get real good fried chicken," said Goodwin after wistfully describing her fried chicken as if at a funeral wake.
Floured and breaded old-school, then fried in a pool of oil on a stainless steel griddle, the chicken is what packs the lobby.
"You don't just get the chicken," said Tyrone Franklin of Bartlett, TN. "You get the mashed potatoes, gravy, cole slaw, green beans hot rolls. Man, you can't beat it!"
The restaurant's decorated with the colorful country-kitsch style of local artist Bonnie Gravette (www.bonniegravette.com). It all adds to a wonderful atmosphere that's completely unnecessary.
Because Slim Skillets had me at 'fried chicken.'
