Ice causes Mid-South travel troubles

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The chilly temperatures ruined travel conditions on streets throughout the Mid-South.

A thin layer of snow covered a layer of ice on Union Avenue, yet many braved the elements to get out and about.

Marist Missionary Sister Mary Cletus was scraping ice off her car.

"I don't want to think about my fingers," Cletus said.

Jimmy Miller's customized bike featured a heater to keep him warm.

"The heater actually gets warm enough, you just put your hands back there," Miller said.  "It gets warm enough because you're exercising at the same time."

Ray Maxwell with Donald's Donuts did not expect many customers on Saturday.

"We may get 25 people all day," Maxwell said.

City and county officials asked that drivers keep off the road if possible.

If travel is necessary, give yourself plenty of time and take extra care.
