Ice-covered tree crashes through Mid-South home

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Icy limbs weighed heavily on trees Saturday.  For one Mid-South family, that weight was too much to bear.

A tree fell through the house where the McCarvers have lived for the last 16 years.

Marjorie Miller, the McCarvers' neighbor, was awoken by the sound early Saturday morning.

"This tree woke me up at 4:30 this morning," Miller said.

Suzie McCarver was confused by the sound at first.

"I thought it was an earthquake," McCarver said.

One branch of the tree jutted through the first-floor bathroom, where the McCarvers now have no power.

McCarver pointed out where the tree had fallen.

"It's uprooted from the whole roots of that big tree," McCarver said.  "It's not just the limbs, it's the roots."

McCarver feared the tree had destroyed her upstairs bedrooms.

"We have two bedrooms upstairs and that's what I thought," McCarver said, "it had fallen on them."

The homeowners believe the only reason the tree did not split the house in two was because it first straddled another tree, easing the impact of the blow.

"My nephew was sleeping in the middle and he was OK," McCarver said.  "If it hadn't split, he wouldn't have been OK, so we're glad the tree split."

William Wilkerson, a family friend, said he was worried about other trees surrounding the nearby houses.

"There's a couple over here that are already leaning, and they're leaning towards the other house over there," Wilkerson said.

It will take a large crane to remove the tree from the McCarvers' home.
