MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A 3-year-old was accidentally shot during an argument between his parents Sunday night.

According to Memphis police, officers responded to a shooting call in the 1,000 block of South Highland around 11:30 p.m  Sunday.  There, investigators said, a woman, Carmilla Wheeler, and her boyfriend, Theodore Hamer, were arguing inside their home.

During the argument, Hamar allegedly had a gun in one hand, and the couple's 3-year-old son in his arms.

According to the arrest ticket, as the two continued to argue, the gun Hamer was holding discharged, hitting the child in the foot.

"He got to arguing with her," said Hamer's uncle, Rickey Price. "The baby got in the way. It was an accidental shooting. He would never shoot his own kid."

The injured child was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in non-critical condition. Another child in the home, age 8, was not injured.

After the shooting, police said, Wheeler took the handgun away from scene, hid it, and lied to investigators.

Hamar, a convicted felon, was charged with aggravated assault and illegal possession of a handgun.  Wheeler, meanwhile, is accused of lying to police investigators.
