SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - The area along Church Road off of I-55 in Southaven is sparse in terms of retail business, but with a new Harley Davidson super store just weeks away from opening, that could soon change.

Southaven City Planning Director Whitney Choat said Friday that developers are bringing in new businesses to the area, including a restaurant.

"It will coincide with the Harley Davidson shop," Choat said. "We have a 9,000 square foot retail center that's gonna go on the same lot as the restaurant, and kind of create a U-shape design to make it more of a destination point."

The plan is to create a Church Road corridor on the west side of Southaven, which will encourage people to eat, shop and ride their bikes in the same location.

According to Choat, the thought is to develop a unique venue that will include outdoor concerts and more.

"What we would like to do is kind of make it an entertainment district, where you've got the Civic Center behind, it so you'll have a small concert area around the Harley site and a large concert area at the Civic Center site," Choat said.

Time will tell whether the new Filling Station restaurant and additional retail business will create a substantial buzz among residents, but Choat says her phone keeps ringing, and prospective businesses will be watching.

"I think they're lying in wait to see this development come to fruition, and I think what you'll see is a domino effect that's going to take over the rest of that west side," Choat said.

Choat says that the success of new developments along Church Road on the west side of I-55 could eventually mean more businesses springing up on the east side of the interstate.  She noted, however, that the area will not become a new Goodman Road.
