MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The Shelby County Health Department and Cawthon Public Health Dental Clinic paired up to sponsor free on-site dental screenings and cleanings Monday for people ages 2 to 20.

The event, which concided with National Children's Dental Health Month, gave dentists a chance to provide oral health education to all children, despite their economic status.

Dentists also taught the children the importance of taking care of their teeth everyday.

"What I notice in the patients that come into our clinic is they have a lot of decay and plaque, so my intention when I treat patients is to increase their awareness of dental hygiene," said Dr. Jasina Smith of the Cawthon Dental Clinic.

Parents said they appreciated the clinic.

"I think it's an excellent program," LaShawn Doty said. "It's done once a year, and if you need the help, you need to take advantage of this program."

If you missed Monday's event and want to find out when your children can next receive a free screening, call the School Based Dental Prevention Program at 901-544-8801.
