COVINGTON, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South woman is upset after she spent more than a month with nearly a $1,000 out of her checking account.
Sally Deverell is a DirecTV customer, but isn't sure if her bank, DirecTV, or a hacker is to blame for her loss. But after 32 days, Deverell is glad to have her money back.
"It put me under a lot of financial stress, paying bills with that much money out of my account unauthorized," she said.
For more than a month, Deverell's checking account had nearly $1,000 less than it was supposed to.
Her bank statement said DirecTV took the money out, which was a problem.
"I pay them by paper check," Deverell said. "I never let them withdraw it from my account and they had no way of knowing my ATM card number."
Both Regions Bank and DirecTV says they're looking into how this happened.
When Action News 5 called Regions Bank about the problem, representatives said they weren't aware of it, but they would try to determine what happened.
In a statement, DirecTV said: "We certainly understand why Ms. Deverell is upset, anyone would be given the circumstances. While we have received confirmation that the funds have been returned to her bank account, we are still researching the source of the problem to prevent issues like this from occurring in the future. We have contacted Ms. Deverell to offer our apologies and provided her with two months of free programming to make up for the inconvenience that this has caused her."
The situation left Deverell wondering about how safe her money is in a bank.
"You think your bank is the safest place to keep money. I'm having second thoughts," she said.
Deverell added she's also having second thoughts about keeping DirecTV.
