ASHLAND, MS (WMC-TV) - Two people were killed early Friday morning when a deadly fire tore through a house in North Mississippi.

Investigators are trying to determine the identity of the two people and what caused the fire.

Neighbor Brandy Williams reacted to the tragic situation.

"Definitely shocked," Williams said.  "It was so close."

Around 1 a.m. Friday morning, flames fully engulfed the home and burned it to the ground.  Authorities put the fire out, but did not see the two bodies hidden under the charred rubble until they returned to the scene around 7 a.m. to check for hot spots.

One body was found in the living room, the other in the bedroom.

Larry Jackson said Jim Russell owned the property.  Jackson said he has known Russell for around seven years.

"I hate it happened," Jackson said.  "I hope it's not Mr. Russell because he's a good friend of mine."

"They need to find out who they are so the families can be notified," Williams said.

Many neighbors said their prayers and sympathy go out to the family.

"It's hard to bury anybody you love," Williams said, "much less in a case like this."

Both bodies have been sent to Jackson, Mississippi for an autopsy.  Authorities said they will have to rely on dental records and DNA to identify them.
