MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Today Show Kid Reporter Deidra Shores recently sat down with Memphis Mayor A C Wharton to talk about issues important to him and to the city.
During the interview, Wharton shared his thoughts on how his childhood dreams were changed by the Civil Rights Movement, and how it felt to meet the President Barack Obama while in Washington for the Conference of Mayors.
Wharton credited his parents as being his greatest influence.
"They let me know that regardless of what you have in the way of education out of books, your character should always outshine what you have in your head," he said.
Deidra also asked Wharton about his vision for the city, including how he plans to bring more jobs to Memphis.
As they wrapped up the interview, the Mayor expressed his hope for the city of Memphis and its future.
"We're a big city, but there's a sense of belonging and care and compassion and concern. So I see that - that's a foundation for a great city," he said.
