MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Memphis man described with graphic detail Monday how he discovered the body of a shooting victim early Saturday morning.

Blake Dawson was working the late night shift at a neighboring delivery company when he made the gruesome discovery.

"I came in at 3:10 in the morning and I find a man in the middle of the road in his car not alive anymore," Dawson said. "I just think it's not right."
Dawson noticed Douglas Smith had been shot several times.

"He was just laying there," he said. "Couldn't do anything for him.  I looked at him and tried to talk to him.  I didn't hear nothing from the man.  He didn't react.  His stereo was on.  His car was still idling still."

It all happened during a brawl in the parking lot of the VIP Club on Covington Pike early Saturday morning. Justin Smith, a nightclub security guard, claims he thought Douglas Smith was trying to run him over, but deputies say Douglas Smith was trying to escape the brawl.

"I didn't know what else to do," Dawson said. "I called 911 and explained how to get here and all the cops showed up."

Justin Smith, who has been charged with second degree murder, appeared in court Monday morning.  He is being held on $300,000 bond.

Dawson said it was a senseless crime.

"This isn't the first time we've heard shots from here," he said. "I heard two shots before when they opened the club.  It was just a matter of time before someone got hurt."

Dawson was so shaken up by the incident he has asked to work a different shift.
