MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - For the third year in a row, the United States Small Business Association is back in Memphis to help inner city business owners grow and prosper.

It all happens through a training program that can be compared to a business boot camp.

"Putting them basically in the midst of a mini MBA over 13 weeks, that will allow individuals to look at how they can expand their existing businesses," the S.B.A.'s Walter Perry said Friday.

The S.B.A. sponsors Emerging 200, a free course offered to inner city entrepreneurs. Recently, Memphis was one of 22 cities across the country selected to host Emerging 200 for a third year in a row.

"The courses will begin in April and we're looking to select 15 entrepreneurs from the inner city area," Perry said.

Hewletta Dudley is the owner of Stragistics Technology, a company which provides IT staffing and consulting services. Dudley says she can't put a price on what she learned when she went through the course last year.

"The relationships and the lessons that we learned in that class helped us to be more effective in our marketing and our sales and out performance," she said.

Over the past two years, Memphis has produced the highest number of Emerging 200 graduates. The SBA says in the face of economic challenges, inner city small businesses are driving the community's economic success.

To offer more information about Emerging 200, organizers will hold a town hall meeting on Monday, March 22, at 7:00 a.m.  The meeting will be held at Southwest Community College, at 737 Union Avenue, in room 101 of the Parish Building.
