MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Mayor A C Wharton is continuing his fight against Forbes Magazine, after the publication recently ranked Memphis the third most miserable city in the nation.

Earlier this month, Wharton issued a challenge to citizens to write letters to Forbes explaining why Memphis does not deserve the miserable ranking.  Wharton even said he would visit any company that wrote 500 letters or more.

The employees of ServiceMaster rose to the challenge, and came to the defense of Memphis by writing more than 600 letters.  The letters touted the courage and vision of city leaders, the people of the community, and its strong values, progress and diversity.

Wharton is proud that citizens took the poor ranking so personally.
"These these folks aren't involved in politics," he said. "They took this as a personal affront to them because its in their community where they're raising their children - where they went to school. So its good to see that it's not just some politician out here saying that, 'This is the voice of the people,' when you see that."

The mayor also promised to hand deliver the basket of letters to the post office.

Wharton said within the city's challenges is a virtue, because the community pulls together to address the problems and find solutions.
