MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - An 11-year-old girl was taken to LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in critical condition late Saturday after nearly drowning in a motel pool at the Drury Inn and Suites on Sycamore View and Shelby Oaks Drive.
Police said the girl was responsive.
Witnesses said the girl was at the Drury Inn for a birthday party. A man who was at a table by the indoor pool at the time the girl was pulled out said he didn't hear or see anything unusual at the time of the drowning. All of a sudden, people where pulling a girl out of the water.
"My wife and I went over there immediately and helped get the girl out of the pool," Randy Hoerschgen said. "My wife is a nurse so she performed emergency CPR right away she finally started breathing."
Randy Hoerschgen said a child at the pool said he saw the girl dive into the water. The area she was pulled out of was only about three feet deep.
Hoerschgen said he and his wife felt like it took too long for paramedics to arrive. Police at the scene did not have a response time available at the scene Saturday night.
Police said Saturday night they were investigating the near drowning as an accident for the time being.
