MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two children were hit by a car near the Memphis International Airport Friday afternoon.

Destiny Poole, 8, and her brother Marquavious Poole, 10, were hit by a driver as they crossed the street walking home from Oakhaven Elementary.

Annette Rogers, a neighbor, heard the collision.

"I heard the brakes slam like somebody was trying to stop," Rogers said.  "When I saw the child in the street I knew then."

Family members watched as police marked off the scene and questioned the driver of an orange Chevy Cavalier.

"I was standing in the yard," said Camille Moore, the children's aunt.  "They told me to help them cross the street so I ran to help."

That was when the children were hit by the car.

Nikii Moore, also the children's aunt, said Destiny did not appear to be severely injured.

"She seems to be fine," said Nikii Moore.  "She is more alert, she can walk, she can talk."

However, relatives said Marquavious was not as lucky.

"His leg was twisted," Nikii Moore said.  "His arm was messed up and the back of his head was split open."

Relatives said it all appeared to be a horrible accident.
