Memphis Loves Kids helps celebrate the Spirit of Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Families in Memphis took advantage of a gorgeous day Saturday to be outside and celebrate the Spirit of Memphis.

The Levitt Shell at Overton Park was full of families at the Memphis Loves Kids Celebration.

Action News 5's own Kym Clark and Andrew Douglas emceed the event.

The festival, which featured many different activities, food and music, was part of the University of Memphis' Spirit of Memphis campaign.

Aisling Maki with Memphis Loves Kids said the event was to point the positive aspects of Memphis.

"There's a lot of focusing on negativity in Memphis," Maki said.  "Sure we have crime and other issues that we have to deal with, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate the great things that are happening in our city."

Maki also said she hoped the free event would inspire a new generation of Memphians.

"We just really want children to feel good about growing up here and be proud of being Memphians," Maki said.
