Mid-Southerners commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Jews across the world and in the Mid-South commemorated Holocaust Remembrance Day Sunday.

The day remembered the 6 million Jews killed by Nazis in World War II.

Memphis Holocaust survivors participated in a candlelight ceremony at the Jewish Community Center.

Dr. Mark Wygoda, the son of a survivor, told his father's survival story of being a German-born Polish Jew who smuggled food to the Warsaw ghetto to keep people from starving to death.

He later became a commander in the Italian Resistance army.

"I learned about the pure evil that can exist in the world," Wygoda said, "but I also learned that one person can make a difference.  My father made a huge difference and he was just what you might call an ordinary man."

Wygoda said his father survived by posing as a Catholic Pole of German descent.
