MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The Memphis Chamber of Commerce wants any company that ships products by land, sky or river to make Memphis its headquarters.

Memphis is at the top of a list to be branded as America's Aerotropolis, and in turn bring hundreds of jobs to the Mid-South.

Jim Covington, Vice President of Logistics with the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, said he wants to use one of Memphis' greatest assets to make the Bluff City a world leader in transportation.

"Geography has always been important to Memphis," Covington said.

The motion would link all modes of transportation and build them around Memphis International Airport.

Thanks to FedEx, Memphis has the busiest cargo airport in the world, the third largest rail center and trucking corridor, as well as the fourth largest inland port on the Mississippi River.

With FedEx on board with the plan, the chamber has high hopes for America' Aerotropolis.

"We're looking very closely at the Lamar corridor to make that much more efficient and serve those industries there," Covington said.

Covington said that if Memphis and the rest of the nation get on board, the jobs will follow.

"Jobs are the most important thing," Covington said.  "That's the result we're looking for."

FedEx is holding a multi-modal conference at the Peabody next month.  Click here to read more about the conference.
