MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A man was charged Friday with kidnapping 4-month-old Skylar Mansel, prompting a statewide AMBER Alert.

Police charged Jerry Taylor after he kidnapped Mansel around 9 p.m. Thursday night.

Mansel is now safe and back at home.

The manhunt began at a Riviera Road home.  Police said that Mansel was in a pickup truck stolen by Taylor.

According to the AMBER Alert, Taylor had made threats to the child's safety.

Taylor did not make it very far.  Tipton County Sheriff's Deputies found him and the baby at his Kincaid Road home in Munford, Tennessee 23 miles away.

Mansel was found perfectly healthy.

Donna Turner, Tipton County Chief Deputy, said deputies were familiar with Taylor.

"When it came out, they were familiar with Mr. Taylor," Turner said.  "Worked on that, got some information where he lives at, went to the address and successfully was able to locate the child."

In 2009, Taylor was indicted for punching his daughter's mother in the head and kicking her in the chest.  He was acquitted at trial.

Taylor now faces theft and kidnapping charges.

Police said Taylor's capture was proof that the AMBER Alert system worked.
