HOLLY SPRINGS, MS (WMC-TV) – A man was shot and killed Monday afternoon just blocks from Marshall County courthouse in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
Holly Springs police said the shooting happened just after 2:30 p.m., when Charles Williamson, 27, and Michael Newson, 25, got into an argument near Memphis Street and Park Avenue in Holly Springs.
The argument took place as Williamson was leaving the Copper Kettle restaurant and Newson was going in.
During the argument, Newson allegedly pulled a gun and shot Williamson three times. Williamson ran into the road, collapsed, and died.
A Marshall County sheriff's deputy happened to be passing by the restaurant when the shooting happened, and chased Newson down a street, taking him into custody.
A restaurant worker, who did not want to be named, knew both men, and was among those to saw Williamson take his final breath.
"It really hasn't settled in with me," she said. "I imagine it'll be bad tonight."
She and others said Williamson and Newson argued about which one was the father of a woman's child.
Relatives said Williamson, who was known as "Pete" to friends and family, left behind at least two young children.
Williamson's mother was rushed to a local hospital after learning news of her son's murder.
Meanwhile, Michael Newson, who has a number of aliases, is in jail without bond, and is set to appear in court Tuesday.
