Southaven High student achieves perfect score on ACT

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - A Southaven High School student is celebrating a major achievement.

Some people are calling him Mister Perfect, although the 17-year old junior will likely say otherwise.  Still, Will Buchanan recently did something very few students anywhere have been able to do.  He scored a perfect 36 on the ACT exam.

Even by Buchanan's standards, this was a big deal.

"I wanted it for a while and I was really hoping this was the test," he said Friday. "I looked on line, saw the score, and got excited. I told my parents, they got excited. It was fun."

Buchanan achieved the score the fourth time he took the test, and he was determined to surpass his previous best which was a 34. Once in college, he plans to major in either one of his two passions: neuroscience or music.

Buchanan, who plays the trombone, sets a great example, according to band director Andy Sanders.

"I think that it's a great example for his peers," Sanders said. "I think they're proud of him, happy for him, and they love him because he's a good human being."

Buchanan credits his grandmother as a major inspiration, saying she was always very encouraging and supportive. He says going to college has special meaning.

"Neither one of my parents were able to graduate from college, so its something they've wanted me to do," he said.

Still, even for a big accomplishment, he takes it all in stride.

"I mean, I'm not perfect, but it feels good to have a 36," he said.
