TUNICA, MS (WMC-TV) - With great fanfare and much anticipation, air travel from Tunica has taken off with the addition of the major airline at its airport.  Thursday, Air Tran marked its inaugural trip of 117 passengers, who flew in non from Atlanta.

Webster Franklen of the Tunica Convention and Visitors Bureau said Air Trans' service would provide travelers with easy access to a great tourist destination.

"The competition in the gaming industry has grown, so we as a destination with our partners in the gaming industry need to find ways to bring people here," Webster said.

A major partner for the city is Harrah's entertainment, a primary investor who helped facilitate Air Trans' arrival. Harrah's regional president R. Scott Barber said there are several advantages to having a major air carrier in Tunica.

"It's a great second option to look at, certainly from a value standpoint," Barber said. "The Air Tran fleet is very young, in tremendous shape, offers WI-FI, and its a quick one-hour flight from Tunica into Atlanta."

Initially, the airline will offer one flight daily on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday.  If things go well, the schedule could expand.

Currently, passengers can fly to and Atlanta and Tunica for $89.  From Atlanta, local passengers gain access to over 50 destinations within the Air Tran network.

Tunica's airport is also in the midst of constructing a new terminal, which should be completed in a few months.
