Suspects charged in church vandalism, burglaries

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two people are in police custody charged in connection with several burglaries, including at least one incident involving church vandalism.

18-year-old Alexander Wyatt has been charged with car burglary and two counts of burglarizing buildings. John Shempert, also 18 years old, has been charged with car burglary and three counts of burglarizing buildings.

One of the buildings the suspects are charged with breaking into is Grey Road Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Police say the crime happened either late Friday night or early Saturday when someone broke into the church, ransacked it, and broke the toilets causing the church to flood.

Officers found the words "White Power", the number 6-6-6, and other anti-religious comments spray painted on the church walls.

On Wednesday, police responded to a report of a car burglary.

The victim said she knew who broke into her car and that they were the same people responsible for several burglaries, including the one at Grey Road Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

That information led police to Wyatt and Shempert.
