MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Former Memphis City Schools Security officer Mario Harris has been indicted for statutory rape by an authority figure and aggravated statutory rape, officials said Thursday.
Action News 5 first reported on this story in October of 2009.
Memphis police were called to Northside High School, where according to an affidavit, a 17-year-old victim told officers she had been in an "intimate relationship" with Harris since April of that same year.
According to the affidavit of complaint, the teenager told police Harris wooed her with "chocolate covered strawberries" and a "Boost cell phone," and said that "they talk on the phone all the time."
The girl's mother became suspicious after she saw the gifts and discovered text messages on her daughter's phone.
Harris was subsequently fired from his position as a reserve officer with the Memphis Police Department after Director Larry Godwin learned of the charges.
Harris is out of jail on bond.
