MCS Superintendent Cash addresses budget cuts

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - The superintendent of Memphis City Schools addressed his system's $48 million budget cuts for the first time Sunday.

Dr. Kriner Cash spoke after an "All About the Children" rally that brought the city's spiritual community and school officials together to honor students, teachers and principals.

Late Thursday night, the school board passed a budget cut proposal that would eliminate 500 jobs, none of them teaching positions.

Cash said he saw these cuts coming.

"I've been warning for two years," Cash said.  "I've said it, I've talked about it, and finally it came because we didn't get enough community effort in order to get our budget restored."

Cash said the budget cuts were just the beginning and until MCS stabilizes its revenue, the system will have to make new cuts each year.
