MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police have confirmed the drowning deaths of two teenage boys who were pulled from a small lake after a boat sank.
A news release Thursday morning from Officer Karen Rudolph stated the victims were 13 and 14 years old. A third boy, who was 13, was able to reach the shore after the boat sank Wednesday evening.
Search and rescue crews brought numerous boats and lights in an effort to find the children after darkness fell. The capsized boat was pulled to shore on the side of the lake.
The news release said searchers found one of the victims about two hours after receiving the 911 call and the other one was found about a half-hour later. Both were later pronounced dead at LeBonheur Children's Hospital.
Lajuane Gause, a cousin of one of the victims, said the children were chasing a lost basketball.
"A basketball fell in the lake," Gause said. "It went in the lake, so they got the boat to try to get the ball ... but the boat was sinking so they jumped out the boat, but the other two couldn't swim."
The names of the victims weren't immediately released.
