Neighboring agencies lend West Memphis police support during funerals

WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC-TV) - While West Memphis police mourned the loss of two fallen offers Monday, officials from neighboring agencies pitched in to coordinate law enforcement efforts.

In order to allow employees to attend the funerals for Brandon Paudert and Bill Evans, the West Memphis Police Department was closed Monday.  But that did not leave the town without officers to call in case of an emergency.

Sgt. Zane Boyd of the Crittenden County Sheriff's Department said the response from volunteers and other agencies was overwhelming, and citizens should not be concerned about their safety.

"We've pulled together," Boyd said. "Men that we've never even met before have come to help. We put a plan together, fanned out all over the city, while the West Memphis police department can be with their brothers and their family.

Boyd said Crittenden County's sheriff's department has more than enough personnel to handle any problems in the police department's absence.  He added that officers from the Arkansas State Police, Wynne Police Department, and the St. Francis County Sheriff's Department also leant their support.
