Teens who drowned in Raleigh lake laid to rest

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two boys who drowned one week ago in a lake in Raleigh were laid to rest Thursday by friends and family.

Family and friends consoled each other as they gathered to say goodbye to 14-year-old Elbert Hughes and 13-year-old Michael Huston.

"It's hard, especially when you see a child a few days before this happens," said Tequila Smith, a friend of the victims. "I have a child of my own.  It's time for the community to come together."

Hughes and Huston drowned trying to retrieve a basketball from the water behind their Raleigh neighborhood.  The boat they were in took on water.  A third teenager swam to safety.

"They're gone," said Lee Robinson, a cousin of one of the victims. "They're with Jesus.  The best thing is they don't have to worry about anything anymore."

Those who attended the service choked back tears, saying while it was an unfortunate tragedy, they wanted to pay their last respects to the two teenagers.  It was a chance to celebrate and honor their lives.

Family and friends said both teens will be missed, but not forgotten.

"We lost two beautiful children," Smith said. "Let's just keep praying for the family."

Family and friends hope to erect a fence around the pond where the boys drowned, to keep children out.
