MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - People around the Mid-South honored the men and women who have served this country Monday.
Large crowds turned out for the Memorial Day services at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.
Doves were released and filled the skies over Memorial Park. Honors also included a gun salute.
Sergeant Brad Warren and the rest of his National Guard detail said everyone should show respect on Memorial Day.
"Many people have fought and given up their lives in defense of this country for us to have the freedoms that we have," Warren said.
Patsy Keefer's father fought in World War II. She said the people who have given their lives serving our country deserve the highest honor.
"I think that we don't give enough credit to the men who have given their lives and the women so that we can enjoy freedom," Keefer said.
Members of a local Boy Scout troop were also on hand to show their respect and gratitude for their sacrifice.
"People in our country who have died, they're very important to us," said Boy Scout Jared Burgett. "It's very important for our freedom and it helps keep us safe."
