MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - One elderly man is dead and another in critical condition after a likely fight between brothers on Memorial Day.

Investigators said at least one man was attacked with a hammer.  No one is in custody and deputies said they are not searching for anyone, they are just trying to make sense of the situation.

Billy Onley described the scene on Chase Road Monday.

"The field was full of cops," Onley said.  "Cop cars were parked over there and they were looking on the ground like they were searching for stuff."

The two elderly men were found bloodied and beaten inside a  house.

Paramedics declared David Hammontree, 75, dead on the scene.  His brother, William Hammontree, 76, had to be rushed to The MED.

William Hammontree was listed in critical condition Tuesday.  While he is unable to communicate, investigators said he partially explained what happened.

Shelby County Sheriff's Office representative Steve Shular said the brothers attacked each other.

"He indicated that there had been an altercation the night before between each of them," Shular said, "between the two brothers."

Although the case is not closed, Shular believes there is no danger to the community.

"We don't believe there's any cause for alarm right now," Shular said.  "We don't believe that there's any other suspect lurking around out there."

Investigators are waiting on an autopsy report from the medical examiner.  They also hope to interview William Hammontree.
