MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A four-month-old baby was left alone Tuesday afternoon for at least one hour inside a hot parked car at a Bartlett Sam's Club.
Maria Daniele stopped at Sam's Club on Highway 64 only expecting to shop.
"We were looking in the van and there was a baby, an infant in the van," Daniele said.
The crying four-month-old boy locked in the van was discovered around 3 p.m. Tuesday during one of the hottest parts of the day.
"It was very red and just dripping, soaking with sweat," Daniele said. "It looked like it had been there for a very long time."
Daniele and another woman called 911 and then tried to get the baby out. An employee tried to break the windows.
"We had a bat," Daniel said. "We could not even break open a window."
Sam's Club management tried to find the person who left the baby in the car, but no one came out to unlock the doors.
When Bartlett firefighters arrived, they broke out the window in the car and got the baby out. They said the baby was in some distress. He was put in an ambulance and taken to the hospital.
The mother, Sarah Horn, later came out of Sam's Club.
"She was hysterical, crying," Daniele said. "She was really upset."
Daniele said Horn acted like she forgot her baby was in the car.
Bartlett Police charged Horn with child abuse, neglect and endangerment. She was behind bars Tuesday night.
Daniele said she still could not believe it.
"You see it and you go, OK, gosh, this is really happening," Daniele said.
The baby was taken to Le Bonheur where he was evaluated. He was out of the hospital and with relatives Tuesday evening.
