SOUTH MEMPHIS (WMC TV) - By day, he collects the city's garbage.
By night, he runs a hot wing chicken joint.
Based on his restaurant's latest health inspection, Clarence Morrow better keep his day job.
All About Dem Wangs, 1381 Elvis Presley Blvd., failed its May 20 health inspection with a 66:
"microwave is burned on the inside"
"the cook washed his hands on a yellow wet wiping cloth"
"raw chicken is stored in the sink with ice...(food temperature violation)"
"mold is inside the ice machine"
"...employee is cooking and preping (sic) vegetables without washing his hands..."
"an outer opening is under the front exit door (insect risk)"
The word "DIRTY" used 12 times to describe restaurant conditions
Morrow said he couldn't accommodate Action News 5 with an on-camera interview because his sanitation crew is behind on its garbage collection routes due to the Memorial Day holiday.
"(The inspector) caught us in a pickle," Morrow said on the phone. "People are already screaming about our (city garbage) services anyway.
"We're trying to do better (with the restaurant), but I know you've got a job to do, Mr. Wise."
One job's enough, Mr. Morrow. Maybe doing both the garbage and Dem Wangs is one job too many.
THIS WEEK'S BIG TIP: Memphis Dawgs, Main St. & Union Ave., Downtown Memphis, 901-483-0379, http://www.memphisdawgs.com/, STAND'S OPEN TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY, 11AM-4PM
Four months ago, Todd Bourne's New York wife gave her man a mission, should he choose to accept it: launch a New York-style "street meat" and vendor stand in downtown Memphis.
Knowing that when Mama's not happy, nobody's happy, Bourne happily obliged.
Now Memphis Dawgs at Main and Union serves up a quarter-pound, New York Nathan's hot dog that's all beef!
"Even the casing is all-beef on this dog," said a proud Bourne. "I get a lot of compliments. A lot of repeat business."
"We actually were down here a couple of weeks ago, and we got one," said Tammy Cunningham of Collierville, TN, with her husband and three boys in tow. "So we actually had to come back and get another one!"
The kraut is killer.
Add Bourne's sweet relish and sweet hot barbecue sauce, and you have Manhattan on a bun.
"If you've never been to New York, you're here now," he said. "I serve a lot of smiles! No doubt about it!"
WHAT ANDY LIKES: Quarter-pound Memphis Dawg with sauerkraut, onions and sweet hot barbecue sauce
