Who wants to debate the critical issues facing our region? Well, apparently not the Democratic candidates for the 9th congressional district.
The district is located entirely within Shelby County and it's considered to be the safest Democratic district in the state, so the August 5th primary is likely to produce the ultimate winner for this seat.
Former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton and Steve Cohen, the incumbent congressman, agreed last year to a debate that would take place at WREG. Herenton reneged on that agreement, saying that the debate panelists were biased against him.
Cohen is capitalizing on Herenton's change of heart by refusing to consider any other debate. So both men, at this point, seem to be saying to the voters that they don't think it's important for the people to have the opportunity to see them face each other in a debate.
Of course, we couldn't disagree more. The region faces many intractable problems. The voters deserve the opportunity to see these candidates face each other. Their reluctance to do so is unbecoming.
