Golfer attacked on Southaven golf course

SOUTHAVEN, MS (WMC-TV) - Southaven police are searching for a robber who attacked an elderly man on a golf course Thursday.

Police have only a vague description of the suspect.  The 70-year-old golfer was playing on a public course in broad daylight.

Chief Tom Long of the Southaven Police Department said the man was lining up a putt on the sixth green when he was attacked from out of nowhere.

"He was caught completely off guard," Long said.  "Subject had come up behind him, hit him in the side of the head, knocked him down and then taken his wallet."

Once on the scene, police noticed a man who fit the description of the attacker but he ran into a nearby neighborhood and police could not capture him.

Long said the golfer was not seriously hurt.

"Golf course standing on a green, putting ball is not where you expect to be assaulted," Long said.

Police asked that if you have any information that could help the investigation, call the Southaven Police at (662) 393-0228 or Crime Stoppers at (662) 429-8477.
