MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - World Cup fever overtook many Mid-Southerners Saturday as hundreds of fans gathered at the Celtic Crossing Pub in Cooper Young to cheer on Team USA in their match against England.
American goalkeeper Tim Howard's wife is from the Bluff City. The couple lives in Memphis during the offseason.
Soccer fans, such as Scott Herlihy, said it was worth braving the heat and crowds to enjoy the match.
"I think there's a lot of people who are friends and family of Timmy ... out here for support," Herlihy said. "Today is about being patriotic whether you're a USA fan or an England fan."
The end result was a solid start for Team USA with a 1-1 tie with England.
