Poll says Shelby County mayoral race in virtual heat

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A brand new voter poll paints the race for Shelby County mayor as a dead heat.

The survey, conducted by Yacoubian Research, asked, "in the August 5 election for Shelby County mayor, do you plan to vote for Republican Mark Luttrell or Democrat Joe Ford?"

Three-hundred and forty-seven adults responded.  With a 5.5 percent margin of error, 40 percent of voters said they would vote for Ford, 39 percent said they would vote for Luttrell.

If 21 percent of undecided voters vote along racial and party lines, it still leaves Ford and Luttrell in a virtual tie.

"I think the public needs to know that this is a wide open race," Berje Yacoubian of Yacoubian Research said.  "The people have not really decided one way or the other.  Anyone who says that Luttrell has a 16 point lead is either misleading or they don't know what they're talking about."

Yacoubian said he expects campaigning to heat up after the July 4 weekend.  He said he is planning to conduct another poll in about three weeks.
